Winner of the 2014 Youth Orchestra of the Year

Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra is the winner of the "Youth Orchestra of the Year - 2014" and will receive a $500 award to be presented by the Classics Alive Foundation.

Congratulations to the Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra conducted by Dr. Richard Loheyde and to all the students who nominated their orchestra. In the past few years the Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra has completed a European tour, instituted a popular concerto competition, premiered several works, collaborated in unique concerts with multiple civic and state institutions including Sonoma State University and the city of Santa Rosa, participated in annual side-by-side concerts with our professional orchestra, and hosted the Bay Area Youth Orchestra Festival with 5 orchestras to raise funds for homeless children.

This year it was among the first ensembles to perform in the new Joan and Sanford I. Weill Hall at the Green Music Center, giving 3 separate concerts this season in this sought-after new venue. Recent masterclasses include: Vadim Gluzman, Carol Wincenc, Dmitri Berlinsky, Allan Biggs, Jean Ferrandis. Upcoming masterclasses include: Paul Silverthorn and Maya Beiser. Aside from Dr. Loheyde, the YO has been conducted in rehearsal by SRS music director Bruno Ferrandis. Highlights of upcoming seasons include a weeklong residency (masterclasses, workshops and concert performances) with Midori, masterclasses with Paul Silverthorn, Maya Beiser and others, and an international tour in 2015.

What the students had to say about their orchestra:

"I really like the people, and we all have fun with the music. I feel that everyone really cares about the music. I plan to continue with music on some level throughout my whole life" - Mitra

"My favorite part of being in my orchestra is playing music that has been popular for centuries and, of course, making friends with musicians who love what they do." - Erica

"Performing music forces one to interact and understand those who share the music with you." - Erick

"Being a composer, I was given the opportunity by Dr. Richard Loheyde to work with some of the musicians on a piece of mine which lets me expand my abilities." - Nathaniel

"Our orchestra has played at high-class venues like Davies Hall in San Francisco. I feel accomplished in performing for others and hope that they can learn to love this music as much as I do." - Matthew

"As a result being a part of this orchestra, I have realized there's so much to do and enjoy in the world of classical music." - Evan
